How do different religions deal with the idea of emptiness? Thorsten Botz-Bornstein takes three terms from three religious traditions: fanā’ (Islam), śūnyatā (Buddhism/Hinduism), and kenosis (Christianity). All three are related to emptiness. What can “emptiness” mean in different cultural and religious contexts? Though the kind of emptiness that the three traditions address is predominantly spiritual, in modern society, emptiness also has mundane functions. Once we get rid of superfluous items and make our lives more “empty,” we can embrace a more coherent and more meaningful reality.
